Top seed Murray wins twice to reach ATP semi-final
2006-07-14
British top seed Andy Murray reached the semi-finals of the ATP Hall of Fame Championship with his second victory of the day, a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of American wild card Robert Kendrick. The Scottish teenager who made an impressive fourth-round run at Wimbledon took only 59 minutes to advance. Murrary had also ousted US wild card Sam Querrey 7-5, 6-2 in a morning completion of a second-round match he led 5-3 when showers struck Thursday. Murray is trying to become the first top seed to win the championship in the 30-year history of the 380,000-dollar grass-court tournament. Next in Murray's path is US eighth seed Justin Gimelstob, who ousted Denmark's Kristian Pless 6-3, 6-1, in another quarter-final match. Austrian sixth seed Jurgen Melzer advanced to the other semi-final by defeating Britain's Alex Bogdanovic 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Melzer will face the winner of a later match between Australian wild card Mark Philippoussis and US seventh seed Mardy Fish, who ousted Brazil's Thiago Alves 6-2, 6-3 Friday in a match that started two days late due to rain.
